Accountability
From Day One

At Chitral Rising, we believe transparency is the foundation of trust. As a grassroots nonprofit in its early stages, we’re committed to using every rupee wisely to create lasting impact.

So far, our work has been fueled by grassroots contributions and personal investment, allowing us to build a strong, sustainable foundation. We track every expense with care, ensuring accountability at every step.

As we grow, we’re preparing to secure grants and larger funding to expand our reach. Our approach is clear, strategic, and built to make the most of every resource for Chitral’s communities.

How We’ve Funded
Our Work

Our Founders' Personal Commitments

Claire Stephens invested $28,000 of her own earnings into constructing Fikr Khana, while Anwar Khan’s family contributed land worth over $20,000. Their initial commitments laid the groundwork for the library, setting the stage for broader community support.

Small Donors & Community Support

Small donors, both local and international, have since contributed $8,000, including 850,000 PKR raised within Pakistan—an extraordinary effort in villages where monthly wages rarely exceed $100. Their generosity has helped sustain and expand the project.

Local In-Kind Land and Material Gifts

Chitrali locals donated wood from their own lands—materials they would have otherwise sold to clear space for farming or building. Their contributions not only made Fikr Khana possible but also sparked interest in three other villages, which have since offered land and materials to establish Chitral Rising libraries in their communities.

Where Your Donations Go

Donated funds are put toward the vital resources that make our work possible:

Construction and Labor Costs

A large percentage of our funds goes toward building safe, flood-resistant infrastructure in areas vulnerable to natural disasters. This investment ensures that our community has access to secure spaces, even during seasonal floods. Additionally, we prioritize fair wages for our skilled Chitrali laborers and contractors, supporting local employment and promoting economic growth within the community.

Flood Relief for Schools and Families

A substantial portion of our funds is allocated to flood relief efforts in Chitral, where floods strike annually, exacerbated by climate change. We provide essential relief kits, which include school supplies, food, and medicines, to support displaced families and students. Additionally, we allocate funds for bulldozers to clear debris and reinforce school buildings, ensuring they remain safe and operational, preventing school closures and interruptions in education.

Essential Library Resources

We allocate funds to develop the Chitral Rising app, which will provide resources and connect individuals to essential programs and opportunities. We also invest in building our library collection, including books that support education, skill-building, and our cultural preservation program. These efforts, alongside other programmatic investments, prepare us for the opening of our first library, Fikr Khana.

Education Continuity in Crisis

We allocate funds to provide full and partial year scholarships for students facing financial hardship, including those who were not in school before we intervened and those at risk of dropping out due to family challenges. These scholarships ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has access to education and the opportunity to build a better future.

Building More,
Reaching Further

We’re actively seeking grants, major donors, and in-kind support like books, computers, and solar power to expand our impact. With land secured for future projects, all funding goes directly to programs—our leadership takes no salaries, and our overhead costs are minimal, staying well under $500 per year. Every donation, big or small, helps us grow, reach more people, and create lasting change.
